St Mark’s is 200 years old
At some point in 1826, St Mark’s opened for worship and was consecrated by the then bishop of Edinburgh in August 1828.
To mark 200 years of worship and service here in Portobello, the congregation celebrated on Sunday 6 August 2026 and we were joined by Bishop Dagmar Winter, Bishop of Edinburgh. It was a joyous occasion and we were so touched to hear messages of support from our ecumenical colleagues, Chris Murray MP and many of our local partners.
During the service we gave thanks for the last 200 years and recommitted ourselves for the next 200 years. As we reaffirmed our faith the bishop sprinkled us using the glass bowl donated to the congregation back in 1827.
We continue to offer a shelter for prayer, hope and life, a place of joy and tears, a place to discover, to doubt and to believe.
Here are some photos of the day.
